Iceberg Safari

The scenery of Fjallsárlón is extremely unique. The biggest glacier in Europe outside the arctic, Vatnajökull towers over the mountains in all its glory. The glacier crawls down a steep slope until it reaches down to the water. At the edge of the glacier, icebergs break off into the lagoon and drift serenely around before melting.

The icebergs are different in size, shape, and hues that make the appearance of each iceberg unique. Wherever you look you can see how the natural forces of the glacier have shaped the landscape. Not only is the glacier constantly sculpting the landscape but also depending on the weather the scenery takes on different forms. This makes each visit to Fjallsárlón a unique individual experience because the scenery is constantly changing.

Sailing besides the glacier and the icebergs is a great memory to take from Iceland and something you should not miss being in the southeast part of Iceland. If you are looking for a memorable activity you should seize the day and do a tour among the icebergs. You will not come across an iceberg lagoon that often!

What to expect?

The tour begins with preparing you and the rest of the group in protective clothing. When it comes to suiting up for the tour it turns out to be a great entertainment for people and a team builder. After suiting up you will be in the hands of your guide. The guide will lead the way down to the lagoon through mossy landscape until you reach the boats. There is then nothing left to do except take off and go an adventure around the lagoon.

The iceberg safari is quite private since there are few people in each boat. We operate on Zodiac boats and the maximum number of each boat is 10 people. Using a small boat gives you a chance to go close to the nicest icebergs and to take an interesting route around the icebergs.

The tour is both an adventure and an informational tour where our guides offer unique inside into the history and nature of the area. You will have a great chance to learn interesting things about glaciers and iceberg formation. If you are lucky you will experience when a piece breaks off the edge of the glacier into the lagoon.

Exclusive!

Private Tours

Unique circumstances call for special occasions, why not go exclusive!

We offer private tours for those who want to be a bit more exclusive. Private tours offer more flexibility of the actual tour and from your guide. The guide can, therefore, tailor the tour to your own individual needs. Please contact us for further information and prices on info@fjallsarlon.is.

Can I bring my camera with me?

You can bring your camera with you. We want you to capture the moment and your memories on film. We would like to ask our guest to bear in mind that we are sailing on water so be careful not to drop the camera in the lagoon and be cautious if the weather is not so good. For safety reasons, we don’t allow drones on normal tours.

Do you provide outdoor clothing?

We provide you with a warm jacket and a life vest. Other clothes we ask you to bring yourself. The weather in Iceland can change rapidly so one minute it can be sunny and the next raining. So having gear like rain pants with you is always a good idea, although you might not need it.

Is there a toilet?

Yes, there are toilets on the location where you get ready for the tour. There is a 5-10 minute walk to the boats so please use the washrooms before we start the tour.

Arrival time and check-in?

We ask our guest to arrive 30 minutes before the scheduled time of the tour. That time gives us a chance to check you in and get you ready in your gear. From the parking area, you will see a few wood-paneled buildings. The reception for the boat tours is located in on of the smaller buildings.

I have no booking; can I still go on a tour?

We advise people to book in advance to ensure that you get a seat reserved at your preferred time. However, we have frequent tours so there is a good chance of space being available. Just give us a call if you are on the way or drop by and simple just ask us.

Can a change my reservation?

Yes, you can depend on availability. Just send us an email on info@fjallsarlon.is and give us your reservation number and note what changes you would like to make. Please make sure you do this 24 hours prior the scheduled tour.
