One of the most popular tourist attractions in Iceland are the famous glacier lagoons, Fjallsarlon and Jokulsarlon. The lagoons are located only 10-minutes’ drive apart and are in rural area in the southeast of Iceland. Being in the middle of nowhere there are not many restaurants in the area. During winter most restaurant close throughout the coldest and darkest months, saying that it is worth mentioning that most hotels in the area offer a dinner menu all year around.
Frost Restaurants – Fjallsarlon
Next to Fjallsarlon glacier lagoon you will find Frost Restaurant in scenic location offering stunning view towards Vatnajökull Glacier. The restaurant is open all year around between 10:00-16:00 so if you are joining any of the Activity Tours that are offered on-site you can enjoy refreshments before or after your tour. A walk to the lagoon is also worth your time and parking at Fjallsarlon is free of charge. The restaurant is a self-service buffet style restaurant that offers soups and a hot buffet with salad bar among other and other light options such as hot drinks, and snacks.
Hotel Jökulsárlón
Is located east of the famous Glacier Lagoon. This newly built hotel boosts of restaurant on the 2nd floor with breathtaking Iceland landscape. This fine dining restaurant offers menu inspired as so many by Icelandic flavors and international cuisine can also be found on the menu. Opening times are from 18:00-22:00 every night.
Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon food
At Jokulsarlon you will find a small café and food trucks offering burgers, Icelandic lamb burgers, lobster rolls. (Open during summer months spring and autumn only).
Hali Country Hotel restaurant
If you are going further east, then Jokulsarlon you have an option to stop at Hali Country Hotel. There the menu is based on locally sourced Icelandic ingredients, such as traditional lamb and arctic char. They are open for breakfast, a light lunch and dinner. There are other hotels and guesthouses that have restaurants worth checking out like Lilja Guesthouse and Smyrlabjörg Hotel.
Höfn i Hornafirdi
If you stay overnight in Höfn 100 km east of Fjallsarlon you have excellent dinner and lunch options. The best restaurants in Höfn are Pakkhúsið Restaurant, Otto Matur & Drykkur, Kaffi Hornid and Íshúsið Pizzeria there are other good options to so everybody should be able to find something suitable. As a fishing town Höfn is well known for its seafood so we recommend you try a lobster, langoustine meal.
Fosshótel Glacier Lagoon restaurant
Is located near the glacier lagoons. the restaurant offers fine dining experience menu by mixing Icelandic nature with modern gastronomy with local ingredients. Dinner is normally served between 18:00-22:00.
Vatnajokull Cafe
West of Fjallsarlon you will find Café Vatnajokull, it is a small but cozy coffee shop in Fagurhólsmýri. Café Vatnajökull offers homemade cakes, sandwiches and soups. It is open daily from 10:00-17:00.
Hotel Skaftafell restaurant
Is located conveniently close to Skaftafell National Park. The restaurant offers classic Icelandic dishes, such as lamb and fish among other options such as burgers and soups. Dinner is normally served between 17:30-09:00.
Freysnes Gas station and restaurant
Freysnes gas station and convenience store are about 40 km away from Fjallsarlon. Road shop and restaurant where you can buy hot food and sandwiches.
Not far from Freysnes near Skaftafell Visitor Center you will find Glacier Goodies a food truck located inside Skaftafell national park offering fish and chips as well as lobster soup. Normally they are open from May 1 to September 30, typically open daily from 11:30-20:00.
Fjallsárlón and Jökulsárlón are about a 5-hour drive from Reykjavík, so it’s a good idea to plan when it comes to dining options, lunch and dinner. For lunch you normally do not have to make a reservation, so it is fine to show up on the day. We highly recommend booking dinner in advance, especially during high season June-September. Restaurant hours can vary by season, and during peak times, some places can get quite busy. Bone appetite!
