Igloo in Iceland – Glamping on another level

Igloo bubble hotel Iceland

Did Icelanders ever live in igloos?

When thinking of housing in Iceland, one might think that in the past Icelanders used to live in igloos made from snow. The fact is that this is not the case, Icelanders never lived in snow igloos. In the much colder neighboring country Greenland housing was however mostly made of snow. The names “Greenland” and “Iceland” might seem contradictory given the contrasting climates of the two countries. Greenland has always been much icier and colder than Iceland. The reason for the conflicting names dates to when the Norse explorer Eric the Red discovered both countries. He wanted to attract settlers to the icy country, naming it Greenland and deter settlers from coming to Iceland with its milder climate and fertile lands.

Glamping in Iceland

In recent years travelers have increasingly been looking for unique accommodation options instead of the normal hotel, hostel or bed and breakfast stay. When demand increased Bubble hotels and glamping options started to emerge all around the country offering a unique stay in a natural environment. These igloos or bubbles are not made from ice, most are produced with fabric, and most have a see-through material. Some are even built completely out of glass; the walls and the ceilings are totally transparent. These igloos give guests the perfect opportunity to watch the stars or the aurora lights from their bed during spring, autumn and wintertime.

Overnight Adventure on a glacier lagoon

There is one igloo “glamping” option in Iceland that rises above other choices when it comes to location, comfort, and unique stays in unspoiled nature. The AuroraHut is a high-tech igloo boat that you find floating among iceberg on Fjallsarlon Glacier lagoon in Southeast Iceland. During the OVERNIGHT ADVENTURE at Fjallsarlon iceberg lagoon people dwell overnight in the igloo boat, enjoying magnificent view over Vatnajokull glacier and the surrounding mountains. The igloo boat has glass walls on one side and glass ceiling for an undisturbed view. You will not find a better place for stargazing or northern lights hunt during spring or autumn. The AuroraHut is packed with comfort, cozy double bed, dry toilet, small kitchen, Wi-Fi, heating, sound system and more such as a floating deck.

Overnight Adventure - Fjallsarlon Igloo

It is somewhat appropriate to say that the igloo which originally was made from ice would find its way in some form onto an ice lagoon in Iceland. Although ice isn’t the building material you will see floating icebergs, and the impressive glacier tongue looking out the window of your room.

Overnight Adventure – Accommodation or tour

The Overnight Adventure starts with a guided boat tour on a zodiac around Fjallsarlon ice lagoon, exploring icebergs and the glacier up close. Afterwards your guide sails with you to the AuroraHut where you will lodge overnight. In the AuroraHut there will be a light meal waiting for you and in the morning a light breakfast.

After you arrive at the floating igloo you have complete privacy as the AuroraHuts are located far away from each other and away from any traffic or people. During your Overnight Adventure you cannot leave the boat as the hut floats on the ice lagoon, you can however enjoy the view from the floating patio. You can therefore say that this is more of an adventure tour than your regular hotel room. Watching the icebergs float around, listening to the crackling sound from the glacier or witnessing an iceberg calving is a once in a lifetime experience. It is a must do tour in Iceland…

Fjallsarlon iceberg lagoon view

The Overnight Adventure is an extraordinarily peaceful and relaxing experience, boasting the most spectacular view imaginable from any hotel room. We can surely say that the Overnight Adventure in an AuroraHut is an experience that is not offered anywhere else in the world. Even the most experienced and seasoned travelers are left speechless after a night on Fjallsarlon glacier lagoon.
